Good news all around!

Today started off with the physical therapist- she came in while we were doing Brant's cares and checked his motor skills. She was very please with where he is at for how premature he is! He is sucking a lot which is fantastic, she even thinks that we can start getting him ready to nurse/bottle feed. The lactation nurse came in a little while ago and set up a time to meet with me and Brant tomorrow and work with us on getting him ready and hopefully next week we will start that process.

Nicki drove down today and I'm glad someone was here with me today! The opthamologist was in this afternoon with a bunch of attendings. They did an ROP test on Brant. What that is is they check the growth of his blood vessels that extend to the retina. In preemies they aren't totally developed at birth and they can grow abnormally and cause problems (blindness being the most severe). When they were explaining what they were going to be looking for and the different scenarios that can happen they said to expect that they wouldn't be fully mature and that he would see something and would need to have a follow-up done in a week or two. BUT they saw nothing! Everything is good and mature so no need to have that nasty test again! Nicki and I left the room while they did it, taking the advice of the nurse and attendings... They said it was really unpleasant to watch. They pry his eyes open and move them around; they put numbing drops in first so he doesn't feel anything but we decided we did not need to watch that. But I was pretty freaked out after they told me all the different scenarios- I always expect the worst.

His eyes are going to be very sensitive to the light for the next day or two so his room is totally dark and black-out shades have been pulled over the windows. It's making me want to go to bed! OH and he is up to 3 pounds 10.5 ounces!!!!
